is a Business Basic utility that can
be CALLed by any BBx4, PRO/5, Visual PRO/5, or ProvideX task to email text
and attachments using the Internet MIME-encoding standards.
While it has always been easy to send text email from Unix-based systems within
Business Basic, it has never been possible to send binary mail with attachments
without resorting to external programs or manual effort. In addition, sending
email from a Windows system generally required using Windows email software,
which does not lend itself to automated activities.
MailCall provides the MIME-encoded attachment capability required by many email
applications, and can be integrated easily into any Business Basic application
to facilitate automated email enhancements. MailCall supports both
Quoted-Printable and Base64 encoding techniques, choosing which based on
the file type and content.
MailCall is compatible with BBx4, PRO/5, and ProvideX. It can use an external
mailer program to perform the TCP/IP communication with the mail server, so it
doesn't require the latest PRO/5 with socket support. Two SDSI mailer programs
are included: mailcall.exe for Windows and mailcall.pl (a Perl script) for Unix.
In addition, on Unix MailCall can use existing sendmail or mmdf software
if that is already operational.
MailCall is a very small package, providing very specific functionality. It
is correspondingly easy to install and use. After installation and setup,
a simple CALL interface is used for all operations.
Some key MailCall features include:
- Small and easy to install and configure
- Simple CALL interface
- Support for plain text and text or binary attachments
- Support for carbon-copy (Cc:), blind carbon-copy (Bcc:), and user-defined mail headers
- Supports both HTML and plain text message bodies
- Inline attachments for referencing image attachments in HTML messages
- Support for authentication (Version 2.0)
- Optional mail dialog and status windows (Version 2.0)
- Runs on both Unix and Windows
