Server Instructions
The server is installed where your Business Basic applications run. You must have
PRO/5 2.2 or higher, BBj, or ProvideX, for the server to operate.
FACTS installations: If you are installing General 6 for a FACTS site, then please note these
custom installation
and configuration instructions.
Unix:
As the root user:
- Choose/Create a directory to store the Gen60 server software.
- Place the download file in the directory.
- Uncompress the file: uncompress filename (it must end in upper-case .Z - rename if necessary)
- Unextract the file: tar xvf filename
- Read the readme.txt file for current information.
- In the install directory, execute ./setup.sh.
- Test the installation by running "gen60d -v".
- The server is configured with the gen60d.ini file and, for BBx installs, the config.gen
file. See the manual for complete information.
- Start the server with "gen60d start"; stop it with "gen60d stop".
Windows 2000 and up:
- Execute the download file to install the Gen60 server. If installing on a Windows server, such as 2003 Server, use Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs
while logged in as an administrator.
- From the Start - Programs - Gen60 Server menu, choose the General 6.0 Server Manager option, then click Configure.
Use the Browse button to locate the Visual PRO/5 or ProvideX run-time. Optionally edit any items in the config file.
- Test the installation with the Start and Stop buttons in the Server Manager
- Once operational, you can use the Configure screen to install General as a service.
Note: the default login code is GEN with no password. Live sites are encouraged
to establish other user codes or set a password on GEN. There must always
be at least one administrative level user code defined, or GEN will again be
created.
More information is in the gen60man.pdf file.
Client Instructions
The client software can be installed on any Windows workstation on your network.
Simply execute the install program once downloaded. Once installed, the client
is started from the Start - Programs - Gen60 Windows Client menu.
If installing on a Windows server, such as 2003 Server, use Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs
while logged in as an administrator.
The client will need the system hostname or IP address of the server, and the listening
port (defaults to 8414 on the server and client), in order to connect to the server.
