About sdStor
sdStor
TM is a powerful document archiving solution
that captures, stores, and retrieves text-style reports and forms. Once stored, reports can be
retrieved for printing and viewing, either from the server's command line or
any Windows workstation on the network.
sdStor consists of three elements:
- A capture program that accepts report and form print streams from any application
on Unix, Linux, and many Windows-based applications as well. This program
is typically integrated directly into printer definitions in the application,
so any printed report is automatically archived.
- A View Server daemon (background process), running on the same system as the capture program, that
provides library access to the Viewer program.
- A Viewer that runs on any Windows workstation on the network, providing
users with a friendly, powerful interface to search for, view, and print
report archives.
Reports are stored in compressed format in a library. There can be any number of libraries
on a system, making it easy to store reports by function, year, or whatever other category
is desired. The library can be specified via the capture command line or a rule file can
be defined to specify the library based on content. Reports can also be transferred
between libraries when needed.
Reports can be retrieved in four formats: text, PDF, PCL5, or UnForm-enhanced. When produced
as PDF or PCL5, the pages are scaled to fit the page. PCL5 output is ready to send
to any Laserjet or compatible printer that supports PCL5 or higher. When
processed through UnForm, sdStor output can be used to reprint laser forms or
graphically enhanced PDF documents. The Windows Viewer is also capable of printing
to any Windows printer as well as driving server-based printing using the above formats. An added
benefit of the Viewer is the ability to email any report in PDF format.
sdStor supports an extensive security model to limit report access to users who
have explicitly been granted rights by an administrator. The model provides users
with different levels of access to specific libraries: none, read, read/write, and read/write/delete.
Special administrative users are allowed to perform any action on any library,
and in addition define users, libraries, and user-library access.
Each report archive is stored with user-definable properties, such as a title, application
date, memo, and keywords. These properties can be set at the time of capture with a rule
file that supports a powerful, text-based script language which automatically detects which
report is being captured and can assign the properties as the job is archived. Other archiving
products require manual effort to assign titles, keywords, and other data elements. With
sdStor, you can manage this effort up front with the rule file, or later with the Viewer.
sdStor is available for users of PRO/5 or Visual PRO/5 (revision 2.2 and up), and ProvideX (revision 5.0 and up).
